Remember to replace the oil before spinning it up. You may find it easier to send it for checking to an O/D rebuilder who will have a test rig, typically operated with an electric motor, and an oil pressure test guage.Īs an initial guide to the condition of an O/D, remove the large plug from beneath and check the oil filter and magnet for signs of any metal particles indicating trouble. To check an O/D off the car, you leave it on the gearbox, as it has to be spun up to obtain the oil pressure it operates on. If you use the sedan gearbox, the input shaft spline might be different, so you would need a matching clutch, but it does have the advantage of being all synchro. It's probably better to transfer the O/D to your 3A gearbox so you retain the correct ratios for the car, which means fitting an O/D mainshaft. The Laycock code for a 3A O/D was 22/61374 and the later 4A "soft engagement" O/D was 22/61753. If the sedan O/D has a horizontal solenoid, these can be a problem to fit to a 3A chassis, which had an O/D with a vertical solenoid.
